Santos, Talles Eduardo Borges dos; UNESP, Ilha Solteira; Nakayama, Fernando Takayuki; UNESP, Ilha Solteira; Arf, Orivaldo; UNESP, Ilha Solteira; Cassiolato, Ana Maria Rodrigues; UNESP, Ilha Solteira.

Comparative analysis of different tillage systems used in sugarcane (Thailand) AgEcon
Grange, Ian; Prammanee, P.; Prasertsak, P..
In order to reduce the impact of decreasing profit margins in crop production systems, all possible options that will increase net profits need to be explored. Land preparation and stool removal in sugarcane production can be a major contributor to overall production costs. Since estimates that mechanization can contribute as much as 50% of the total production costs, considerable savings can potentially be made if the number of tillage operations is reduced. Such savings however, have to be offset against other costs associated with minimum or no-tillage systems, such as the increased need for herbicide. In addition, conventional tillage systems have been implicated in yield decline over the long-term and therefore yield benefits are envisaged, together...

Effects of Reduced and Conventional Tillage on Weed Communities: Results of a Long-Term Experiment in Southwestern Spain Planta Daninha
PARDO,G.; CIRUJEDA,A.; PEREA,F.; VERDÚ,A.M.C.; MAS,M.T.; URBANO,J.M..
ABSTRACT: An important drawback in adopting minimum tillage (MT) and no-tillage (NT) techniques is the frequently observed weed shift promoting adapted species and achieving poorer weed control. These changes can be detected best with long-term experiments, and results might differ depending on soil characteristics and the local flora. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the effect of reduced tillage on weed seed distribution in the soil profile and to identify possible consequences on weed diversity on a long-term experiment maintained during 24 years in Seville (Spain) with three tillage systems: NT, MT and conventional tillage (CT) including moldboard plow on a vertisol. For this purpose, soil seedbanks at 0-8 cm and 8-16 cm depths were...

THE DETERMINANTS OF ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE TECHNOLOGIES: EVIDENCE FROM THE HILLSIDES OF HONDURAS AgEcon
Arellanes, Peter; Lee, David R..
Recent years have seen a growth of interest in the adoption and diffusion of low-input sustainable agricultural technologies among smallholder agriculturalists in developing countries. This paper examines the adoption of one such technology, labranza minima, a form of minimum tillage, among resource-poor agricultural households in villages in central Honduras. Logistic regression is used to analyze the determinants of adoption of minimum tillage among a sample of 250 agricultural households. The results show that plots with irrigation, plots farmed by their owners and plots with steeper slopes were more likely canididates for minimum tillage adoption. Farmer household characteristics are not generally found to represent significant influences on...

Schick,Jefferson; Bertol,Ildegardis; Barbosa,Fabrício Tondello; Miquelluti,David José; Cogo,Neroli Pedro.
ABSTRACT Water erosion, the main factor in soil degradation, is strongly influenced by soil cover and management. The objective of this study was to determine soil and water losses under natural rainfall conditions from 1993 to 2012 in the southern Santa Catarina Plateau, Brazil, in 3.5 × 22.1 m plots with crops in rotation to study the following management treatments: conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT), and no-tillage (NT), and a treatment with bare soil (BS). The soil cover remaining after tillage was negatively affected by the increase in soil tillage intensity. Soil losses were strongly affected by the management system, while water losses were less affected. Soil losses were 85.29, 6.41, 2.00, and 0.82 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in the BS, CT, MT, and...
